Micro Bakery & Kitchen
Words by Andrew Koh and Angie Koh

Passion, The Main Ingredient

Neatly tucked in a small corner of Serene Centre, Micro Bakery & Kitchen is one of the successful artisanal bakeries in Singapore offering a myriad of hand-crafted, organic delicious bakes. While the pocket-sized space meant that things could become a little hectic during peak periods, the petite bakery gave the team members the atmosphere of a cosy home. As such, they are able to work in a more relaxed and comfortable environment, serving up food in an unpretentious way. The team also prides themselves on being able to establish connections with customers simply through a cup of coffee or some handcrafted bread, and small talk. To the team members, the incredibly rewarding experience at the bakery continues to fuel their passion for their work.

Signature creations

The bakery’s Signature Sourdough Country Loaf is a must-try, with its satisfying crunch serving as a fine balance with an elastic crumb. Bridget Chen, founder of Micro Bakery & Kitchen, highlighted that the taste and texture of a sourdough depends on the type of flour used and the baker’s prior experience working with the flour. Thus, each batch of bread may taste slightly different from the last one that was bought, but this is also what makes their small-batch handmade sourdough breads unique. Aside from their signatures, the Ricotta Tartine with Oven Roasted Tomatoes and Basil has earned a devoted following among regular customers. Freshly made from the kitchen and served cold, the ricotta is soft and creamy, with the tomatoes adding a touch of tanginess to this brightly coloured dish.

As the food and beverages industry in Singapore is currently undergoing a rapid transformation, there is a need for businesses to address employees’ skills gap. With support from Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), Micro Bakery & Kitchen is nominating its employee, Keith Chua, for the SG Barista Training Course.

A young boy’s passion for coffee

As a long-term part-timer at the bakery, Keith has won the faith of his peers and customers alike with his earnest endeavour. According to Keith, his passion for coffee goes back all the way since he was 16. “I feel thankful and honoured to be nominated by my company, Micro Bakery & Kitchen. I am looking forward to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for coffee,” he says.
