Bukit Merah’s secret: Carrara Café – Artisanal Gelato & Ice cream
Words by Jereann Teh

Experience the richness of artisanal Gelato & Ice cream situated in Bukit Merah. Founded in 2015, the café holds a love story; a start-up by the founder, Jackson Lee an Ice-cream lover and his then girlfriend (now wife) who dreamt of owning a cafe to serve artisanal gelato to the residents of Bukit Merah.

This beautiful Southern Italy inspired design Carrara Café also boast an extensive menu of food choices that reflects their love for artisanal creations, food philosophy of culture & community representation. Whether you are in for a hearty brunch or sumptuous dinner spread, drop by the Carrara Café at Blk 2 Jalan Bukit Merah and be delighted!

Stepping into the cafe, the use of Carrara Marble in its interior design transcends time and gives the cafe an elegant feel. Designed by the founder who is a trained interior designer, the combination of natural marble with classic and shades of grey and white makes the cafe an Instragrammable spot for top notch Instagram pictures and a popular event holding spot. The extensive menu (beautifully plated) offers a range of choices one can choose to munch on. Listing a few- Smoked Salmon Cheese Rosti, Premium Truffle Breakfast Pasta, Kecap Manis Chicken Chop, Charcoal Waffle With Salted Egg Sauce; the signature dishes include the Marmite Fried Chicken Waffle and Chilli Crab Pasta – renditions of local fare fused with Western cuisine.

Savour their signature Gelato ‘Little Nonya‘ which clinched the 1st Runner up position at the Singapore Gelato Championship 2019 organised by the Dessert Association of Singapore. This delight pays homage to the Singapore’s vibrant Peranakan community and the Blue pea lemongrass flavour is created with all-natural based ingredients to give it its baby blue colour.

Another flavour that we cannot get our eyes off is a customer favourite, smooth and creamy – Avocado Gelato!

An upcoming effort by the café is the SG Barista Training Course [conducted by School of Coffee, supported by Employment and Employability Institute (e2i)], which will be attended by founder Jackson Lee. He is a trained interior designer and had owned his own interior design company before launching into the Food and Beverage industry in 2015. Attaining training in Western Culinary Arts from SHATEC, he has acquired Gelato making skills along the years and is keen to widen his knowledge in Barista skills to gain in depth understanding of the skills and technique to impart to his team.

The café provides Espresso based coffee on the menu such as favourite caffeine fixes – Espresso, Cappuccino and even Osmanthus flavoured latte!

Having received a fundamental training by the coffee machine supplier in preparing the beverages; and coupled with the upcoming SG Barista Training Course – he aims to polish on his barista skills and to push his understanding of the beauty the coffee bean has to offer.

“I am extremely happy to be nominated for this Barista training. It will allow me to learn more about coffee and barista skills to improve the standard and quality of coffee served at Carrara and so that I can in turn train and impart the skills and knowledge to my team at Carrara.” – Jackson Lee
