Technology offers flexibility and versatility to Eat Bar without adding labour, with the help of NTUC e2i’s WorkPro Job Redesign Scheme

Since its inception in 2020, local F&B company Eat Bar Pte Ltd grew through word-of-mouth referrals and social media among their consumers, partly with their quirky tagline ‘来吧,吃霸’ (which loosely translates as ‘come here eat lah’). Boasting an air-conditioned eatery, Eat Bar’s cosy place provides interactive games such as foosball and claw machines, as well as offering a plethora of local Singaporean fares such as their signature Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee, Pan Fried Carrot Cake and Nonya Laksa.

Despite the restaurant’s success, challenges inevitably surfaced. The to-and-fro movement from the counter to the kitchen was both physically demanding and time-consuming. Seeing the need to redesign the work processes, Eat Bar was able to invest in a new Combi Oven under the NTUC’s Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) WorkPro Job Redesign grant, which provides support to companies to remodel their work processes to make them safer and smarter for older workers.

Previously, food was prepared manually and older workers had to rely on their memory and experience in terms of cooking timing and temperature control of food. During peak hours, considerable waiting time ensued, with kitchen staff getting inevitably stressed while preparing and serving the food.

With this new combi oven, it allows the desired temperature and cooking duration to be pre-set. Different cooking methods such as grilling and roasting can be performed all at the same time too, suiting the versatility of the dishes that Eat Bar offers. The worker’s productivity has also increased as cooking process will be consistent and faster, thus minimizing the probability of over-cooking of similar orders and free up staff to perform other tasks. Inherently, this oven also helps to improve the serving process quicker and better as long waiting hours can be minimized and customers can enjoy their piping hot foods heartily.

Through the use of more modern technology equipment, Eat Bar seeks to provide a safer working environment and improved productivity for their staff, which in turn enable the company to continue innovating their menu and serving quality food to their consumers at affordable prices. Despite many companies being affected during this COVID-19 period, the company believes in supporting the older workers and in particular, one of the older workers received a pay raise. These initiatives are timely and much-needed support for the older workers impacted by COVID-19, and serves as a morale booster for them.
